 ROSIE JONES

     U.S. SOLHEIM CUP CAPTAIN

                                            "2011"

February 24, 2010

The LPGA announced today that 7 time Solheim Cup Player Rosie Jones has been selected as The United States Captain for the 2011 Solheim Cup competitions at Killeen Castle, Ireland,  September 23-25!

Rosie will lean on the experience from her 25 years on tour, 7 Solheim Cups and 13 LPGA Tournament Wins as she leads her team into battle at the 12th staging of the event in County Meath, Ireland.

Rosie played in the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990 at Lake Nona, Fl.  as well as 6 other competitions, her last in 2005 under Captain Nancy Lopez at Crooked Stick, Indianapolis IN.

                                    Quotes From Rosie:

Rosie on the Tee at Europe hosted Solheim" I am absolutely Thrilled and Honored to be chosen as the 2011 Solheim Cup Captain.  The Solheim Cup has been a huge part of my career over the past 20 years as a player, and now it will be even more exciting as I prepare over the next several months for what will promise to be another great Solheim Cup competition in Ireland!  I couldn't be more proud to represent the United States as their Captain and with this opportunity to lead our US Players over the pond to Killeen Castle to retain the cup."

" This year marks 20 years since the first Solheim Cup and I have loved every minute of the competition on and off the course, either as a player, commentator, or supporter!  Being the 2011 Captain marks a new dimension for me and I look forward to the experience with as much motivation, zest, and excitement as I did as a player."

Quotes from Former Captains, Players and more:

Nancy Lopez  "Rosie will be a great captain.  She has put her heart and soul into every Solheim Cup she has played in.  She has the experience and enthusiasm to bring her team to victory.  I wish her the best."

Betsy King  "I am very happy that Rosie is our next Solheim Cup captain.  Rosie was always such a fighter and great competitor during Solheim Cup competitions, and I am sure that she will take that fighting spirit to Ireland as she leads the U.S. team in 2011.  She will do a tremendous job for the team and representing the United States."

Mike Whan (Commissioner of the LPGA)  Rosie’s energy, passion and personal Solheim Cup success makes her the perfect fit.  She’ll bring a great combination of coach, motivator and experience to this role. Rosie Jones embodies everything that’s great about the Solheim Cup, and as an LPGA fan, it will be exciting to watch the U.S. and European squads compete next year. I’d also like to thank John Solheim and all Solheim Cup Global Partners for their on-going support of this unique event in women’s golf.”

Juli Inkster, eight-time Solheim Cup competitor and highest points earner in team history:
“She'll bring a lot of energy to the team. I know this is something she's wanted for a long time. Over in Ireland, I think she'll be fiery and she'll get the team ready to go. I'm really happy for her. I think she deserves this, she's earned it. As far as Solheim Cup play goes, there is not a better competitor than Rosie Jones. I'm really excited for her.”

Cristie Kerr, five-time U.S. Solheim Cup Team member:
“I am thrilled. She was my first Solheim Cup partner ever at Interlachen, and she was the person that taught me a lot in that first match. I think we ended up winning that match. I am just really happy for her; I hope I make her team. You know, she's got more spirit, more guts and more heart than a lot of people. I admire that about her.”

Michelle Wie, youngest member of the victorious 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Team:
“I'm really excited. I've always looked up to Rosie, seeing her play in the Solheim Cup. She is one of the best match play competitors, and hopefully, if I get on that team, I can learn something from her. I think she would be an awesome captain and I would be truly honored to play for her.”

 Rosie's Captains Log:

2-10-2010

It was turning out to be a some what gloomy day, (we have had many this winter) as I was sitting in my office perched in the loft of my house, when my phone rang.  Not recognizing the number, I chose to ignore the call as I was reminiscing about my mother and how she would be turning 80 that day.

A minute later I picked up the message, it was the new commissioner of the LPGA Mike Whan.  "If I could call him back he would love to talk to me."

I remember talking to Betsy King (2007 Solheim Cup Captain) last November on the range at our Legends Tour Championship and how her call to the Captainship came from out of the blue with out any forwarning.  And even knowing that, I had no idea that this would be his reason for calling me.  More>
